Why Every Small Business Needs an Active Google Business Profile (and How to Set Yours Up)

smiling Woman looking at laptop

If you’re a small business owner trying to get found online, one of the most important (and free) tools at your disposal is the Google Business Profile (GBP).

Formerly known as Google My Business, this platform helps your business show up in local search results and on Google Maps. Whether you’re a contractor, café owner, consultant, or creative professional, a well-optimized and regularly updated GBP is a powerful way to stand out from the competition. I’ll be showing screenshots of Google searches and businesses that show in the results. I’ve blurred out some of the info(except for my business) for privacy but you can search the same terms to see unfiltered results.

Why an Active Google Business Profile(GBP) Matters

Here’s what a GBP can do for your business:

Improves Local Visibility

When someone searches for businesses “near me,” Google prioritizes local results with active profiles. This is especially important for service-based businesses and brick-and-mortar locations. The image below shows search results for ‘web designers near me’.

Builds Trust with Customers

Your GBP is often the first impression someone gets of your business. A profile with accurate info, reviews, and fresh updates shows you’re credible and responsive.

Drives Traffic — Online and On Foot

An optimized profile makes it easy for people to visit your website, call you, get directions, or book services — all from one place.

Boosts SEO Performance

Google uses your GBP information to understand your services, location, and relevance. The more complete and active your profile, the more likely you are to show up in local search results.

Highlights Real Customer Reviews

Reviews are powerful social proof. A steady stream of positive reviews can boost your reputation and encourage new customers to reach out. Below is an image of search results for ‘contractors near me’

How to Set Up and Optimize Your Google Business Profile

If you haven’t claimed or optimized your Google Business Profile yet, now’s the time. Here’s how to do it step-by-step:

1. Go to google.com/business

Click “Manage Now” to get started. If you have different email accounts in Google, be sure to select the correct one to manage you GBP.

2. Add Your Business Name and Category

Use your official business name and choose a category that best matches what you offer (e.g., “Web Designer,” “Home Renovation Contractor,” “Yoga Studio”).

3. Enter Your Location (or Service Area)

If you have a storefront, enter your address. If you travel to your clients or work remotely, select “Service Area Business” and define your coverage area.

4. Add Contact Details

Include your phone number and website URL. Double-check for accuracy — this is what customers will see on Google.

5. Verify Your Business

Google will typically send a postcard to your address with a verification code. Some businesses qualify for phone, email, or video verification.

6. Add Your Business Hours

Keep your hours accurate and update them for holidays or special closures.

7. Upload Photos

High-quality photos add credibility and improve engagement. Include pictures of your team, workspace, services, or past projects.

8. Write a Business Description

Explain what your business does, who you serve, and what makes you unique. This is your chance to stand out.

9. Ask for and Respond to Reviews

Encourage happy customers to leave a review. Responding to reviews — even negative ones — shows professionalism and care.

10. Post Regular Updates

Use the “Posts” section to share promotions, blog articles, announcements, or seasonal offerings. Regular activity tells Google (and potential customers) that your business is active and engaged. Be sure that your ‘updates’ are not ‘salesy’. Google will flag them. The two images below show what you should see when you add an update

Final Thoughts

Your Google Business Profile is often the first — and sometimes only — place potential customers interact with your business before making a decision. Keeping it updated and optimized is one of the easiest ways to improve your visibility, build trust, and get more leads. This is a great way to keep your business visible to your local area and it’s free. Take advantage of this and also have clients write reviews.
