Having a strong online presence is no longer optional—it’s essential. Whether you’re running a café, offering coaching services, or managing a local contracting business, your website is often the first impression people have of you and your brand. It’s where potential customers go to learn about what you offer, how to contact you, and whether you’re the right fit for their needs.
If you’re thinking about building or redesigning your website, chances are you’ve come across the term discovery call. A discovery call is a free, no-pressure conversation that gives us a chance to talk through your goals and challenges before jumping into a project. But what exactly does it involve? And why does every web designer—including myself—want you to schedule one before anything else happens?
A discovery call is more than just a quick chat. It’s a focused, strategic conversation that lays the groundwork for a successful website project. For both the business owner and the designer, it’s the best way to make sure everyone’s on the same page before investing time, energy, or money. It’s a way to ‘Discover’ what your needs and problems are and how I can solve them.
In this post, I’ll break down what a discovery call is, what it isn’t, what you can expect from one, and why it’s an important step you don’t want to skip.
What Is a Discovery Call?
A discovery call is typically a 15–30 minute phone or video call that gives us a chance to learn more about each other. On your end, it’s an opportunity to talk about your business, your goals, and the challenges you’re facing with your current website (or the lack of one). On my end, it’s a chance to understand how I can help—and whether we’d be a good fit to work together. And if it turns out we’re not the right match, that’s completely okay. That’s exactly what the discovery call is for—to figure that out before anyone makes a commitment.
Think of it as the foundation for everything that follows. Without a discovery call, we’d be making assumptions about your needs, timeline, and budget. And that’s not the right way to start a meaningful business relationship.
Why I Offer a Discovery Call Before Every Project
I never skip the discovery phase because it’s key to building a website that actually works—one that supports your goals and makes your business stronger.
Here’s what a discovery call helps me do:
- Understand what your business does and who it helps
I’ll ask you to tell me about your business—what you offer, who your typical customers are, and what makes your work special. Whether you’re a local café, a contractor, or a coach, I want to understand what you do and how you help people so your website can reflect that. - Learn what’s frustrating you—and what you’re hoping for
If you already have a website, I want to hear what’s not working. Maybe it’s outdated, hard to update, or just not bringing in any business. If you’re starting fresh, we’ll talk about what you wish your website could do. These insights help me focus on what matters most to you. - Recommend the right kind of website for your goals
Based on what you tell me, I’ll suggest the best way to move forward. That might be a fully custom website, a faster and more affordable option using a pre-designed theme, or ongoing website support and updates through one of my website management plans. - Figure out your timeline and budget
We’ll talk about when you’d ideally like your website to be live and how much you’re hoping to invest. This helps us stay realistic and make sure the project fits your goals and resources. - Make sure we’re a good match
Not every project is the right fit—and that’s okay! The discovery call gives both of us a chance to ask questions and see if working together makes sense. If it doesn’t, I’m happy to point you in the right direction.
It also helps you get clarity. I’ll walk you through my process, answer any questions you have, and explain what to expect if we move forward.
What Happens During the Call
A discovery call with me is casual but structured. It’s not a sales pitch or a high-pressure situation. It’s simply a chance to talk through your needs and make sure we’re aligned.
Here’s a general outline of what we’ll cover:
1. Introductions
We’ll start with a quick hello and overview of who you are and what your business is all about. I’ll also introduce myself and share a little bit about how I work with clients.
2. Your Business & Goals
I’ll ask questions to better understand:
- What your business does and who you serve
- What role your website plays (or should play) in your business
- What goals you’re hoping to achieve (e.g., more leads, better SEO, easier site management)
3. What’s Working (and What’s Not)
If you already have a website, we’ll talk about what you like about it—and what frustrates you. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll talk about why now is the right time and what success looks like for you.
4. Project Scope & Timeline
We’ll discuss the size and scope of your project (e.g., number of pages, features like contact forms or booking tools) and your ideal launch date. If you’re not sure yet, that’s totally okay—we can figure it out together.
5. Budget Discussion
This is where we talk about what kind of investment you’re planning to make. I know this can feel a little uncomfortable, and some people worry that sharing their budget might affect the price they’re quoted. But being open about your budget helps me recommend the right solution for your needs—whether that’s a custom-built website, a faster and more affordable theme-based option, or ongoing support through one of my website management plans.
Sharing your budget doesn’t lock you into anything—it simply helps us stay realistic about what’s possible. Without knowing your budget, I can’t responsibly begin the project, since every solution is tailored to your goals, timeline, and resources.
To help you plan ahead, most of my website projects start at around $2,200–$3,000, with larger or more complex builds ranging higher. My goal is always to give you the most value for your investment—not to upsell you on things you don’t need.
6. Next Steps
At the end of the call, I’ll outline the next steps. If it seems like a good fit on both sides, I’ll follow up with a proposal or plan for moving forward.
What a Discovery Call Is Not
To clear up any misconceptions, let me also say what a discovery call isn’t.
- It’s not a tech deep-dive. We won’t be talking about code or back-end systems. That comes later, once the project kicks off.
- It’s not a design consultation. You don’t need to know what colors or fonts you want yet. We’re focusing on your goals first.
- It’s not a commitment. You’re not locked into anything by booking a call. If you decide not to move forward, that’s totally okay.
- It’s not a sales pitch. I’m not here to push a service you don’t need. I’ll be upfront about what I can (and can’t) help with.
Why a Discovery Call Matters
You might be tempted to skip this step and jump straight into a quote or a mockup. But here’s why that approach can backfire:
- You might end up with a website that looks nice—but doesn’t support your goals.
- You could waste time and money on the wrong solution.
- You miss the chance to build a working relationship before making a big decision.
For me, the discovery call ensures I’m not just designing a website—I’m designing your website. One that reflects your business, attracts the right customers, and helps you grow.
What You’ll Get Out of It
After the call, most people tell me they feel clearer, more confident, and more informed. Even if you’re still weighing your options, you’ll walk away with:
- A better understanding of what your website needs
- A realistic sense of timelines and investment
- An outline of how I can help (or a referral if I’m not the right fit)
If we decide to work together, we’ll move on to a full project proposal and kick off the design and development process. If not, no hard feelings—it’s still a win to get some clarity on your next steps.
